29-year-old Ethiopian-American Melat Asfawesen Kiros has been elected to the United States Congress representing Colorado. Supported by the Democratic Socialists of America, Melat has made history as one of the youngest women elected to the US Congress. Born in Addis Ababa, she immigrated to Denver, Colorado, with her family via the DV lottery as a child. A law graduate from the University of Notre Dame, she previously worked as a lawyer in New York and is currently employed as a waitress while pursuing further studies. Her political campaign focused on opposing lobbying influence and maintaining a critical stance regarding Israel's military operations.
