Over 20 people reported detained without trial in West Oromia
Over 20 individuals in the Sayu Nole district of West Oromia have reportedly been detained for months without appearing before a court. According to legal expert Kenesa Degefa from Mettu University and local residents, some detainees have been held since Pagume 2018 (late August/September 2023), with most unaware of the reasons for their arrest. The expert criticized the detentions as a violation of legal procedures and human rights.
Sayu Nole District Police Commander, Commander Asebe Bulti, stated that the individuals were arrested in connection with current security conditions and suspected criminal activities. The commander confirmed that 25 people are being held in relation to these ongoing security issues, adding that their cases are being reviewed by a security council. Critics argue these prolonged detentions without judicial oversight undermine trust in the justice system.
