Ethiopian Electric Power Faces Over 7 Billion Birr in Pending Compensation Claims
Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) CEO, Engineer Ashebir Balcha, has announced that the institution is currently facing over 7 billion birr in pending compensation claims under legal dispute. He identified compensation issues as a primary bottleneck hindering the acceleration of infrastructure projects. The CEO highlighted that fraudulent information and unauthorized support letters from various sources are exposing the utility to unjustified compensation demands, complicating projects that were initiated in the past.
Engineer Ashebir also criticized the implementation of the new compensation proclamation. He noted that while the law assigns regions the responsibility of managing compensation for development-displaced individuals, the lack of implementing directives has prevented regional authorities from assuming this duty effectively. This regulatory gap is causing significant delays in power transmission and distribution projects across the country.
