Clashes on South Ethiopia Zone Borders Leave Multiple Dead and Over 500 Displaced
A violent conflict along the borders of Konso, Alle, and South Omo zones in the Southern Ethiopia Region has resulted in multiple fatalities, severe property destruction, and displacement. The clashes erupted around Pagume 4 following an initial dispute over missing cattle from Bena Tsemay Woreda entering Kolme Woreda in Konso Zone. Armed groups launched attacks in Masoya Kebele, destroying homes, a health post, educational facilities, flour mills, and places of worship. Kolme Woreda Administrator Fikru Berhanu confirmed that at least 4 people died, 6 were injured, and 21 houses were burned, while local residents reported up to 6 deaths on the Konso side. Over 500 residents from Kurgo, Durayle, Kisima, and Tukana areas have been displaced, and armed elements took control of the crucial Weito River irrigation area. Representatives from Bena Tsemay Woreda reported 2 deaths and 3 injuries on their side, blaming outside agitators for exacerbating the conflict. The Ethiopian National Defense Force has entered the region to restore stability and stop the gunfire.
