Ambassador Redwan Hussien Speaks on Challenges in the Media Sector

Ambassador Redwan Hussien, Board Chair of the Ethiopian Media Authority, highlighted significant challenges within the country's media sector, specifically citing a lack of owner knowledge, weak oversight, and insufficient professional competence. The Ambassador made these remarks during the inauguration of the Ethiopian Media Excellence Center. He stated that the Authority provides repeated guidance to media outlets before taking punitive measures, noting that some have been advised up to 15 times. He criticized media owners for investing without understanding the sector or vetting their staff's background and ethical standards. Furthermore, the Ambassador pointed out that many media errors stem from a lack of specialized knowledge among journalists, such as reporting on law or finance without proper expertise.
